PROBLEM SIGN · STORM DRAIN REHABILITATION

Foul odors from storm drains indicate a condition that camera inspection can identify and fix.

Sulfide odors from storm drain inlets and catch basins indicate one of several conditions — organic accumulation in sediment-filled pipe sections, cross-connection between storm drain and sanitary sewer, or decay of organic matter trapped by root intrusion or structural obstruction. Camera inspection identifies the source.

WHAT CAUSES STORM DRAIN ODORS

Three sources of foul odors in storm drain systems.

Storm drain odors have specific sources — each identifiable by camera inspection and addressable through targeted rehabilitation.

Organic sediment decay in sediment-filled pipe sections

Sediment accumulated in low-velocity storm drain sections contains organic material that decays anaerobically — generating hydrogen sulfide gas that vents through inlets and catch basins, particularly during warm weather.

Cross-connection between storm drain and sanitary sewer

Sanitary sewer connections — legal or illegal — to storm drain systems introduce wastewater odors directly. Cross-connections are identifiable by camera inspection using smoke or dye testing.

Root intrusion or structural obstruction trapping organic debris

Root masses and structural obstructions trap organic debris with each storm event — creating pockets of decaying material that generate persistent odors even after storm events pass.

Dry-weather discharge from sanitary sources at storm drain inlets

During dry weather, any flow appearing at storm drain inlets is likely from a sanitary source — indicating cross-connection that needs to be identified and eliminated.

IDENTIFYING THE SOURCE

Camera inspection identifies what's generating the odor.

Storm drain odors can be misattributed — treating for sediment when the source is a cross-connection, for example, will not resolve the problem. Camera inspection identifies the actual source.

  • Camera confirms whether sediment accumulation is generating the odor
Pre-jetting camera inspection of odor-generating sections typically shows the sediment depth and organic content — allowing targeted jetting to remove the odor source and restore flow.
  • Smoke or dye testing confirms cross-connection presence and location
Where camera inspection suggests a possible sanitary cross-connection, smoke or dye testing confirms the connection location and flow path — enabling targeted remediation.
  • Camera identifies structural obstructions generating debris accumulation
Root masses and structural obstructions that are trapping organic debris show on camera — allowing combined root cutting, structural repair, and jetting to eliminate the debris accumulation generating the odor.

WHEN ODORS ARE MOST COMMON

Conditions and locations where storm drain odors are most common.

Storm drain odors are most common in systems that combine sediment accumulation with warm temperatures — where anaerobic decomposition of organic material is most active.

Catch basins and inlets near commercial food service operations

Storm drain inlets near restaurant loading areas and food service facilities frequently receive grease and food waste — generating strong odors from organic decomposition in sediment at the inlet.

Low-gradient storm drain mains with long sediment residence times

Flat-gradient storm drain systems with low flow velocities retain sediment between storm events — creating the extended anaerobic decomposition conditions that generate the strongest odors.

Older commercial developments with commingled sanitary and storm infrastructure

Pre-1980 commercial developments may have sanitary connections that were standard practice at the time but create cross-connection odor problems in modern separated stormwater systems.

Systems downstream of areas with high organic runoff loading

Storm drain systems receiving runoff from agricultural operations, landscaping maintenance areas, or composting facilities accumulate higher organic loads in sediment — increasing odor generation.

BEFORE & AFTER

Restaurant district storm drain — sediment jetting eliminated persistent sulfide odors.

A Charlotte restaurant district property association had been receiving odor complaints from outdoor seating areas adjacent to storm drain inlets for two full summer seasons. Camera inspection of the affected storm drain main found heavy organic sediment accumulation — sediment depth averaging 30% of pipe cross-section, with visible anaerobic decomposition material.

LiningWorks hydro-jetted the full affected storm drain run, removing all organic sediment accumulation. Post-jetting camera confirmed full pipe cross-section restoration. Odor complaints from the adjacent outdoor dining area ceased within two weeks of the cleaning.

We had a plumbing emergency around the holiday's and called a local plumbing company. They cleared the line and quoted a pretty high price to dig up my yard and fix the damaged sewer line. The next day I found LiningWorks online and called Jeremiah. He was very helpful and confident they could fix my sewer line without digging. Seemed too good to be true. The lining has been installed, yard not damaged and looks to have resolved the break. Jeremiah even offered to come back and scope it at a later time to ensure it's all good. Highly recommend Lining Works for any situation where you can't or don't want to dig. Thanks guys!

LiningWorks was top notch. We had a sewer main that got damaged and was completely blocked up. They were able to clear the drain, remove all issues, and reline the entire sewer main without cutting out my driveway and yard. And they were able to get the job done in one day. I would and plan to do business these guys again in the future and would highly recommend them to others.

Where do I begin? Let's just say I had an absolute nightmare on my hands for about 5 years with my sewage. I had one company quote me 7k after he snaked my sewage line and from there I just kept snaking it every year. I dreaded the oncoming financial disaster but I bit the bullet and called LiningWorks. BEST home decision of 5 years. Jeremiah came out and tackled this chaos with grace and integrity. He got down to the root of it — after years of money, anxiety, and frustration he found out it was a city problem! I will definitely be calling LiningWorks when my lining needs replacing. Call them now, you will not be disappointed.

Lining Works was excellent to work with. They were perfectly professional. They were organized, efficient, and friendly throughout the whole process. They took time to answer all of our questions. Pipe lining is an incredible option and the team at Lining Works couldn't have been better. They were also transparent, honest, and consistent with their cost/pricing. We couldn't be happier. We feel very fortunate that we found Lining Works. Great guys!

The main drain line in our airbnb kept clogging up, filling the house with an awful sewage smell. We had drain cleaners come out to clear the line every couple months but it finally got so bad we had to close off our bookings. LiningWorks were very prompt in coming out. We discovered tree roots had broken up our line. Our sewage line runs under a tree and 6ft deep through our crawlspace so digging it up was going to be a nightmare. Liningworks was able to cut the tree roots out and line the pipe without any digging so that it's as good as new. Would definitely recommend them to anyone needing sewage line repair.

WHY LININGWORKS

Camera-first storm drain odor diagnosis and remediation.

Storm drain odors have specific sources that require specific remediation. LiningWorks camera-first approach identifies the source before developing a targeted solution.

Camera identifies the odor source before any remediation scope is developed

We identify whether the odor is from sediment, cross-connection, or structural obstruction before recommending jetting, cross-connection elimination, or structural repair.

Hydro jetting removes organic sediment and eliminates the decomposition source

High-pressure jetting removes all accumulated organic sediment — eliminating the decomposition conditions generating hydrogen sulfide and other odor compounds.

CIPP lining addresses structural obstructions trapping organic debris

Root cutting and CIPP lining eliminate structural obstructions that are trapping organic debris — removing the collection point for the material generating the odor.

Pre- and post-cleaning documentation for property records

Camera footage before and after remediation documents the odor source and confirms its elimination — for property management records and future maintenance planning.
