COMMON REASONS

When Trenchless Pipe Bursting is the right call.

Pipe bursting is used when the host pipe is too damaged to hold a CIPP liner. Four conditions make bursting the correct — and most cost-effective — choice.

Pipe Bursting for collapsed pipe sections

A collapsed pipe has lost its round shape and cannot host a liner. Pipe bursting destroys the old pipe outward and pulls new HDPE through — full diameter restored.

Pipe Bursting for severe root infiltration

When roots have taken over the full pipe interior and the wall is compromised, pipe bursting removes the old pipe entirely and replaces it with jointless HDPE roots cannot enter.

Pipe Bursting for clay tile and cast iron past service life

Pre-1970 clay tile and cast iron often reaches a point where lining is not viable. Pipe bursting replaces the entire run without disturbing the surrounding soil.

Pipe Bursting under driveways and hardscape

The burst head follows the existing pipe path exactly — two access pits at each end, nothing in between. The driveway or patio stays intact.

CATCH PROBLEMS EARLY

Why pipe bursting timing matters.

The pipe bursting process works best when the surrounding soil is still intact. Four situations where calling sooner saves money and complexity.

  • Pipe Bursting before the void under the pipe grows
An active sewer leak erodes soil around the pipe. The larger the void, the more complex the bursting pull becomes. Early action keeps the surrounding soil compacted.
  • Pipe Bursting before a sinkhole forms in the yard
Once the soil over a collapsed pipe voids and collapses at the surface, the access complexity increases. A sinkhole means the void is already large.
  • Pipe Bursting preserves trees and root systems
The burst head follows the existing pipe path. No trench means no tree roots cut — mature landscaping survives intact on most residential runs.
  • Pipe Bursting avoids emergency pricing
A scheduled pipe bursting job is always less expensive than an emergency response to a sewage backup. The line is failing — calling sooner means calling with options.

SERVICE PROCESS

How our Pipe Bursting process holds up.

A pipe bursting job requires precise planning, the right burst head, and careful verification. Four standards make every LiningWorks bursting job consistent.

Pipe Bursting starts with HD camera diagnosis

Every job opens with a sewer camera that maps the collapsed sections, pipe material, diameter, and city-tap geometry. The bursting spec is built from camera data.

Pipe Bursting requires correct burst-head selection

The burst head must match the host pipe diameter and material. We spec this before arriving on site — no improvisation on a bursting pull.

Pipe Bursting pulls HDPE to match the original diameter

New HDPE pipe is pulled through the burst path at full original diameter. No reduction in capacity — you get a structurally superior replacement pipe.

Pipe Bursting is verified by camera from cleanout to tap

After the pull, a camera scope walks the new HDPE line end to end. You watch the new pipe on screen and keep the verification footage.

SIMPLE PROCESS

The Trenchless Pipe Bursting process, step by step.

Same five-step sequence on every residential pipe bursting job.

Camera-scope the failed pipe before bursting.
Step 1

Camera-scope and map the failed pipe.

A high-definition sewer camera maps every collapsed section, pipe material, diameter, and access geometry — so the bursting head and HDPE pipe are sized correctly before we arrive.

Step 2

Excavate two small access pits — front and back.

We excavate only at the entry and exit points of the burst path — typically at the cleanout and city tap. Nothing in between is disturbed.

Step 3

Thread the HDPE pipe and attach the burst head.

New HDPE pipe is staged behind the exit pit and attached to the burst head. The head fractures the host pipe outward, displacing it into the surrounding soil.

Step 4

Pull the burst head through — HDPE follows.

A hydraulic puller draws the burst head through the host pipe path. The old pipe is destroyed outward; the new HDPE arrives at the exit pit in a single continuous pull.

Step 5

Camera-verify the new HDPE line end to end.

A final camera scope walks the new HDPE pipe from cleanout to city tap. You watch the replacement pipe on screen and keep the before and after footage on USB.

BEFORE & AFTER

Pipe Bursting before and after: a NoDa case.

An 1890s NoDa home had a fully collapsed 4-inch clay-tile section confirmed on camera. We ran pipe bursting from the cleanout to the street tap in one day. No excavation, no open trench, original landscaping untouched.

Nearly every collapsed-pipe job in Charlotte follows the same pattern: scope, access pits, burst, verify. One day, one flat price, full-diameter HDPE in place.

We had a plumbing emergency around the holiday's and called a local plumbing company. They cleared the line and quoted a pretty high price to dig up my yard and fix the damaged sewer line. The next day I found LiningWorks online and called Jeremiah. He was very helpful and confident they could fix my sewer line without digging. Seemed too good to be true. The lining has been installed, yard not damaged and looks to have resolved the break. Jeremiah even offered to come back and scope it at a later time to ensure it's all good. Highly recommend Lining Works for any situation where you can't or don't want to dig. Thanks guys!

LiningWorks was top notch. We had a sewer main that got damaged and was completely blocked up. They were able to clear the drain, remove all issues, and reline the entire sewer main without cutting out my driveway and yard. And they were able to get the job done in one day. I would and plan to do business these guys again in the future and would highly recommend them to others.

Where do I begin? Let's just say I had an absolute nightmare on my hands for about 5 years with my sewage. I had one company quote me 7k after he snaked my sewage line and from there I just kept snaking it every year. I dreaded the oncoming financial disaster but I bit the bullet and called LiningWorks. BEST home decision of 5 years. Jeremiah came out and tackled this chaos with grace and integrity. He got down to the root of it — after years of money, anxiety, and frustration he found out it was a city problem! I will definitely be calling LiningWorks when my lining needs replacing. Call them now, you will not be disappointed.

The main drain line in our airbnb kept clogging up, filling the house with an awful sewage smell. We had drain cleaners come out to clear the line every couple months but it finally got so bad we had to close off our bookings. LiningWorks were very prompt in coming out. We discovered tree roots had broken up our line. Our sewage line runs under a tree and 6ft deep through our crawlspace so digging it up was going to be a nightmare. Liningworks was able to cut the tree roots out and line the pipe without any digging so that it's as good as new. Would definitely recommend them to anyone needing sewage line repair.

FAQ

Trenchless Pipe Bursting — Frequently Asked Questions

Short, honest answers — same way we'd explain it on the phone.

Pipe bursting pulls a bursting head through the old pipe, shattering it outward while simultaneously pulling in a new HDPE pipe behind it — replacing the line without a trench.

Yes. Pipe bursting can install a same-size or larger replacement pipe. Most residential upgrades go from 4-inch clay to 4-inch HDPE, but upsizing to 6-inch is possible.

Pipe bursting works in most soil conditions. Sandy, clay, and loam soils are all suitable. Rocky soil or very shallow lines may require a different approach.

We need small entry and exit pits at each end of the run — typically two to four feet square. No trenching along the pipe route.
