Problem Signs/Collapsed or Broken Sewer Pipes
PROBLEM SIGN · CHARLOTTE, NC
Collapsed or Broken Sewer Pipes and what it takes to fix them for good.
A collapsed or broken sewer pipe is not a repair job — it is a replacement job. Once the host pipe loses structural integrity, CIPP lining is no longer an option. LiningWorks diagnoses collapsed and broken pipes with a sewer camera, then replaces them trenchlessly the same day using pipe bursting.
Collapsed or Broken Sewer Pipe warning signs you should never ignore.
Collapsed or broken sewer pipes often give a few signals before full failure. Four warning patterns we treat as same-week urgencies.
Sewage backup in the lowest fixture in your home
When a pipe collapses, wastewater has nowhere to go. It backs up at the lowest point — usually a basement floor drain or ground-level toilet.
Multiple drains backing up simultaneously
A single collapsed section affects every fixture that drains through it. If the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and toilet all fail at once, the main line has collapsed.
Gurgling throughout the home after any fixture is used
Air forced back through a collapsed section creates loud gurgling at multiple fixtures — a clear sign the main line is compromised.
Outdoor sinkhole directly over the sewer path
A collapsed pipe creates a void underground. As soil fills it, you get a depression or sinkhole on the surface. This is a collapse, not just a slow drain.
The most common causes of Collapsed or Broken Sewer Pipes in Charlotte.
Charlotte's older neighborhoods — Dilworth, Plaza Midwood, NoDa, Eastover — are full of clay-tile and cast-iron lines that were installed 60 to 100 years ago. Four things cause them to collapse or break.
Tree roots causing Collapsed or Broken Sewer Pipes
Root masses in clay-tile joints exert thousands of pounds of force over years. Eventually the pipe wall gives way and a section collapses.
Age-related failure causing Collapsed or Broken Sewer Pipes
Clay tile and cast iron have 50-70 year service lives. Past that, corrosion, scale buildup, and joint separation lead to structural failure.
Soil movement causing Collapsed or Broken Sewer Pipes
Charlotte's expansive clay soils shift with moisture cycles. A pipe that was straight and round can become offset, cracked, or fully collapsed in a dry summer.
Heavy surface loading causing Collapsed or Broken Sewer Pipes
A driveway paved over an old clay-tile line, or heavy equipment parked above the sewer run, can crush brittle pipe sections that have no structural margin left.
An 1890s NoDa home had a fully collapsed 4-inch clay-tile section under the back yard — confirmed on camera. We ran pipe bursting from the house cleanout to the street tap in one day. No excavation, no open trench, original landscaping untouched.
Nearly every collapsed-pipe job we run in Charlotte follows the same pattern: scope, confirm collapse, burst and pull HDPE, verify on camera. One day, one price.

We had a plumbing emergency around the holiday's and called a local plumbing company. They cleared the line and quoted a pretty high price to dig up my yard and fix the damaged sewer line. The next day I found LiningWorks online and called Jeremiah. He was very helpful and confident they could fix my sewer line without digging. Seemed too good to be true. The lining has been installed, yard not damaged and looks to have resolved the break. Jeremiah even offered to come back and scope it at a later time to ensure it's all good. Highly recommend Lining Works for any situation where you can't or don't want to dig. Thanks guys!

LiningWorks was top notch. We had a sewer main that got damaged and was completely blocked up. They were able to clear the drain, remove all issues, and reline the entire sewer main without cutting out my driveway and yard. And they were able to get the job done in one day. I would and plan to do business these guys again in the future and would highly recommend them to others.

Where do I begin? Let's just say I had an absolute nightmare on my hands for about 5 years with my sewage. I had one company quote me 7k after he snaked my sewage line and from there I just kept snaking it every year. I dreaded the oncoming financial disaster but I bit the bullet and called LiningWorks. BEST home decision of 5 years. Jeremiah came out and tackled this chaos with grace and integrity. He got down to the root of it — after years of money, anxiety, and frustration he found out it was a city problem! I will definitely be calling LiningWorks when my lining needs replacing. Call them now, you will not be disappointed.

I received an estimate and the job did exceed the original estimate. I contacted them about it and they were very understanding and explained why.

The main drain line in our airbnb kept clogging up, filling the house with an awful sewage smell. We had drain cleaners come out to clear the line every couple months but it finally got so bad we had to close off our bookings. LiningWorks were very prompt in coming out. We discovered tree roots had broken up our line. Our sewage line runs under a tree and 6ft deep through our crawlspace so digging it up was going to be a nightmare. Liningworks was able to cut the tree roots out and line the pipe without any digging so that it's as good as new. Would definitely recommend them to anyone needing sewage line repair.
